My son is 18 and a full time student. He also worked and made less that  $6100. In 2013 Does he still need to file taxes.

Oscar,

Thanks for contacting me, but I cannot answer your question from what you told me.

The reason I created this website and wrote a short ebook was that taxes for teenagers can be quite complicated.

I like to say, “Quick questions, do not have quick replies!”

In order to correctly answer your question I would need to know:

  • Other sources of income (like investment income in your son’s name, other jobs, etc).
  • Any tax was withheld for the federal or state.
  • His student status
  • Who provided his support

Since I am not your tax preparer (nor do I want to be at this late date), do not send me that information and ask me to tell you if he needs to file a tax return!

The best thing for you to do is enter your son’s income into your tax software or use the IRS Free File software. That will tell you if you need to file a return for him.

Oh wait, the best thing you could do could be to part with $3.00 and 30 minutes of your time and read my ebook Teens and Taxes.
